Privacy Policy

DiveDex is a marine- and freshwater-species identification app by Donarun Das. The short version: DiveDex runs on your device, and we do not collect, store, or receive any of your personal data.

What DiveDex does on your device

• Identification is on-device. Your camera feed is analysed on your phone to identify species. Camera images are processed live and are not uploaded to us or anyone else.
• Photos you save are stored on your device — in your photo library and in the app. We never receive them.
• Location. If you allow location access (“While Using the App” only), DiveDex uses your GPS on your device to geotag the photos you save and to label the place name. Your location is not sent to us.
• Settings, dive log, and captures are stored only on your device.

We do not use analytics, advertising, tracking, crash-reporting, or any account/login. We do not build profiles and do not sell or share data. There is no DiveDex server that receives your personal information.

When information leaves your device (only if you choose)

1. Downloading the species model and packs

On first launch (and when you add a species pack), the app downloads data files from our content server (marine-id.donarundas.com). Like any web request, our server may briefly log your IP address for security and to deliver the files. We keep these technical logs for a limited period (about 30–90 days) and do not use them to identify or track you.

2. “Check on iNaturalist”

If you tap this on a saved capture, the app sends the photo’s coordinates and the species name to iNaturalist’s public API to look up nearby records. This is optional and happens only when you tap it. iNaturalist is operated by a third party; its use of that request is governed by its own privacy policy.

3. Sharing a photo

If you use the share button, the photo (which may include location in its metadata) is handed to whatever app you pick (e.g. iNaturalist, Messages, Instagram). What happens next is governed by that app’s privacy policy.

You control all of this: don’t tap Check or Share, and no data leaves your device beyond the initial model/pack download needed to run the app.

Your choices and rights

• Location: grant or revoke anytime in your device Settings.
• Your data: delete individual captures in the app, or delete all app data by uninstalling.
• Because we hold no personal data about you, there is nothing for us to export or erase on our side. For questions about the server access logs, contact us and we will help.
• Depending on where you live (e.g. the EU/UK under GDPR, or California under CCPA), you have rights over your personal data. Since we do not collect any, these are satisfied by the on-device design.

Children

DiveDex is not directed at children and collects no personal data from anyone, including children.

Changes

We may update this policy; the “last updated” date will change. Material changes will be noted in the app’s release notes.
